Project Description:
What started as a routine electrical upgrade became a $16 million design-build modernization effort and Enterprise Electrical delivered it on schedule.
The South Houston Local Processing Center, a 433,600-square-foot USPS facility, was transformed into a high-capacity mail-processing hub built to serve the Houston region for the next 30 years. What began as a $1 million electrical upgrade quickly evolved into a multi-phase design-build project requiring continuous design development, phased construction, and real-time problem solving.
As both the electrical designer and electrical contractor, Enterprise Electrical played a central role in shaping the project's success. With incomplete design documentation and a rapidly evolving scope, Enterprise Electrical's integrated design-build team developed engineered electrical solutions in real time while construction progressed. This approach enabled critical infrastructure decisions without delaying the schedule and provided the flexibility needed to support continuous project growth.
As operational requirements expanded, Enterprise Electrical redesigned power distribution strategies and service configurations to accommodate increased demand while maintaining critical project milestones. What began as an 800A service upgrade ultimately expanded into multiple 4,000A services supporting advanced mail-processing equipment, automation systems, and future facility growth.
One of the project's most significant successes involved the procurement of custom-built 4,000A switchboards during a period of industry-wide supply chain disruptions. While typical lead times approached 52 weeks, Enterprise Electrical partnered with Houston-based manufacturers to engineer, fabricate, and deliver the equipment in just eight weeks, preserving critical milestones and preventing schedule impacts.
When USPS operations went offline, the clock started. Through disciplined phasing, field-engineered solutions, and continuous coordination, Enterprise Electrical helped restore portions of the facility to operational status midway through construction. From that point forward, crews worked alongside active mail-processing operations as they completed the remaining phases of work, requiring careful planning, communication, and safety management.
The project demonstrated the value of design-build delivery by enabling rapid decision-making, continuous design refinement, and proactive problem-solving throughout construction. The scope expanded from $1 million to $16 million. USPS operations were restored before the project was completed. Switchboards, which typically have 52-week lead times, were delivered in just eight weeks. Despite every challenge, the original completion schedule remained intact.
Today, the South Houston Local Processing Center is a modernized, high-capacity processing hub designed to serve the Houston region for the next 30 years. Through continuous design refinement, accelerated procurement strategies, and disciplined project execution, Enterprise Electrical transformed a routine electrical upgrade into a $16 million modernization effort while maintaining the original completion schedule.
