Project Description:

JE Dunn and PGAL recently completed a design-build project that modernized emergency response infrastructure at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW). The project consolidated four Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) stations into two strategically located facilities, replacing infrastructure that had supported airport operations for more than 50 years.

Designed to strengthen emergency response capabilities across one of the world’s busiest aviation hubs, each new station features 10 apparatus bays equipped with high-speed, multi-fold doors that enable the rapid deployment of multiple ARFF vehicles. This included state-of-the-art hybrid apparatus equipment and associated charging capabilities with solar powered battery backup system. The facility also includes 21 dorm rooms, dedicated training and fitness areas, and modern living accommodations that support round-the-clock readiness.

Specialized spaces for hazardous materials response, decontamination, and equipment storage allow crews to efficiently manage incidents and quickly return to service during sustained operations. The station’s layout was designed to enhance operational efficiency while supporting the daily needs of emergency personnel.

Built to ICC 500 standards, the facility incorporates hardened construction and an F5-rated storm shelter to ensure continuity of operations during severe weather events. These resilient design features help protect personnel, equipment, and critical airport functions when they are needed most.

By replacing aging infrastructure with a modern, resilient facility, the project enhances public safety, improves operational readiness, and supports DFW’s continued growth for decades to come. Through a collaborative design-build approach, JE Dunn, PGAL and DFW Airport delivered a next-generation emergency response facility that strengthens safety and reliability across one of the nation’s most important transportation hubs.
