ABOUT THE PROJECT
Project Name: GlobalWafers America CDA Plant Mechanical Design-Build
Address: Sherman, Texas
Project Dates: August 2023 – February 2026
Construction Type: Design-Build
Highlights: High-purity CDA production, design-build delivery, VDC execution, zero OSHA recordables
Project Description:
The GlobalWafers America (GWA) CDA Plant is a mission‑critical utility system supporting one of the largest semiconductor manufacturing projects in the United States. Located in Sherman, Texas, the completed facility supports domestic production of 300‑millimeter silicon wafers and plays a key role in strengthening the national semiconductor supply chain. Funded in part by the CHIPS and Science Act, the campus spans more than 1.6 million square feet of advanced manufacturing space.
As the design‑builder, TDIndustries designed and constructed the Compressed Dry Air (CDA) plant, which serves as the central utility supporting core manufacturing systems throughout the facility. The CDA system supplies actuated valves, chillers, cooling towers, pumps, boilers, deionized water processing systems and the facility’s automated material handling system. Continuous, high‑reliability operation is essential to support 24/7 semiconductor manufacturing and strict quality requirements.
TDIndustries engineered the CDA system to exceed typical air purity and performance standards required for semiconductor fabrication. The system incorporates multi‑stage oil‑free air compressors, advanced filtration, desiccant drying and fully stainless‑steel distribution piping. These components were selected and integrated to support both current manufacturing needs and long‑term operational reliability.
Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) was used extensively to support system layout, equipment coordination and installation sequencing within the Central Utility Building. Detailed modeling and coordination allowed TDIndustries to optimize routing, reduce conflicts and support efficient installation in a highly congested and technically dense environment. Off-site prefabrication of high‑purity piping assemblies further enhanced quality control while improving schedule reliability and minimizing on‑site installation risk.
The CDA plant was delivered on time and on budget with zero OSHA recordables over more than two and a half years of construction. The completed system provides continuous, high‑purity compressed air essential to semiconductor‑grade manufacturing and demonstrates TDIndustries’ ability to execute complex, high‑reliability utility infrastructure using an integrated design‑build approach.
