ABOUT THE PROJECT

ADDRESS: Chester, Illinois

PROJECT DATES: August 2023 – December 2026 (Planned)

CONSTRUCTION PROJECT VALUE: $284M

CONSTRUCTION TYPE: Design-Build

HIGHLIGHTS: Compass, iTraMS, PDA Testing

Project Description:

The Chester Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge crossing the Mississippi River approximately 60 miles south of St. Louis. The Bridge itself features two 880-foot spans and is supported on a mix of 4-foot diameter pipe pile and 8-foot diameter drilled shafts. The Mississippi river bridge consists of seven (7) spans and is 2980’ long and has a steel girder and pre-cast panel superstructure with a thin concrete overlay. The project also consists of a 4-span pre-stressed girder bridge over the Horse Island Chute.

Terracon provided QC and QA inspection and testing services for the duration of the project. This included providing a full-time quality manager, a quality control lead and a quality acceptance lead. The team developed and maintained the project construction quality control plan.

For the project, Terracon developed a digital Inspector Daily Report (IDR) that all staff completed each day. The IDR has geo-location features that allow for the mapping of observed construction deviations and completed hold points. The team also developed a digital non-testable material check-in form to allow for digitally tracking material certifications and documents associated with material deliveries.

Due to the remote nature of the project, Terracon provided a certified mobile field laboratory constructed from three Connex boxes. The laboratory was used for nuclear gauge storage, curing and breaking cylinders, and testing aggregates and soils.

At our peak we had 10 staff working full-time on the project, and we provided services ranging from PDA pile testing and inspection, pre-cast deck panel production, concrete and rebar inspection and testing, embankment placement and testing, steel girder installation, cable stay tensioning, and thin concrete overlay deck placements.
