This presentation will focus on the benefits and challenges of using the design build process on projects pursuing LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification for green buildings. Dekker/Perich/Sabatini has worked on over 20 LEED projects in the southwest under a variety of delivery methods, including design-build, and has customized their management process to suit each method. Examples of lessons learned from local projects that were fully design-build, and projects in which only the MEP portion was design-build, will be discussed along with other general issues.

Speaker: Julie Walleisa, AIA, LEED AP, is an Associate with Dekker/Perich/Sabatini, practicing as both an architect and sustainable design advisor. Walleisa draws on her experience with designing sustainable buildings and her expertise inmanaging LEED projects to explore appropriate design solutions and carry them through construction. She has eight years of experience in programming, designing, and managing commercial and institutional projects. Walleisa has managed or advised on over fifteen projects pursuing LEED certification, including projects using the LEED-NC, LEED-S, LEEDCS, and LEED-CI rating systems. These include public and private office, mixed-use, industrial, laboratory, residential, school and community buildings delivered through varied methods including design-bid-build, design-build, fast-track, etc. She is a member of the board of directors for USGBC-NM and a member of the Albuquerque Mayor's Green Ribbon Task Force.

Dallas/Fort Worth District Meeting

A District Superintendent's Viewpoint on the Benefits of the Design-Build Project Delivery Method

Date: Tuesday, September 30, 2008
Time: 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.
Location: To be determined

Most superintendents depend on the training, experience, talent and integrity of other professionals when building school facilities. Even though many school superintendents enjoy the construction process, they are trained as educators, not architects and builders. School buildings require a high standard of performance which begins at the design phase. This presentation will discuss the use of the Design-Build Method as provided by local board policies with an emphasis on how school administrators can deliver smart, cost efficient, productive and proficient facilities for instruction.

Speaker: Dr. Jeri Pfeifer is the Superintendent of Schools for Everman ISD, a fast-growing school district in South Tarrant County. She has been a school superintendent for ten years and a school or college administrator for twenty years. During all of those years, she has been building, remodeling, updating or repairing campuses and major construction projects. Every project has been delivered with high building productivity and efficient cost. Further, during all of those years and projects, she has successfully used all of the various construction delivery systems allowed by the Texas Education Code. All of them provide good buildings that serve the public, but the Design-Build Method is her preference because of the intense up-front planning and collaboration inherent to this delivery system. Many, if not most, of the problems are identified and solved before ground-breaking. That leaves a construction period to run at fast pace with a minimum of change orders. It's a win-win-win for architects, builders and clients.
